In a molecular fractionating still comprising a stationary evaporator surface 26 surrounding a stationary condenser surface 10, a wiping and transfer assembly is mounted to rotate between the two surfaces, the assembly comprising elements 68 which wipe both surfaces and transfer condensate from the condenser surface to the evaporator surface through upwardly inclined channels 114. The evaporator may be in the form of an upright doublewalled cylinder divided into two heating jackets. The lower jacket is maintained at a higher temperature than the upper one. The liquid to be fractionated is fed into an annular gutter and flows through channels between the two jackets to the hot inner wall of the cylinder, where it is spread over the surface 26 as a film by the wipers 108 carried by elements 68. Evaporation of the more volatile components of the liquid film occurs, and the vapour formed condenses on the condenser surface 10. The flexible scraper blade 110 of each element 68 removes the condensate from surface 10 and transfers it, via channels 114, to a higher level on surface 26, where it is redistributed as a film and re-evaporated. The final distillate is withdrawn from the top of surface 10. The residual liquid flows off the base of surface 26. The angle of ducts 114 can be altered to control the rate of fractionation of the liquid in the still. |
