A gas-liquid contact column 1 has contiguous vertical packed flow channels whose boundary walls contain apertures 12 permitting the passage of gas or vapour but not liquid; cells 4 of metal or plastic packing unit 11 are packed with elements 13 which may be constituted by corrugated perforated lamellae, the corrugations of adjacent elements being at right angles and the corrugations of at least one of each adjacent pair of lamellae being inclined to the vertical column axis; alternatively corrugated and uncorrugated lamellae may alternate in a horizontal plane. In another construction the boundary walls are formed from inverted U- or V-shaped elements, Figs. 5 and 6. Preferably the column contains separate packed sections divided by spaces extending across the vertical column axis. Alternative packing is provided by Raschig rings.
