PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To appropriately extract a skin area from the two-dimensional color picture of a human head part. SOLUTION: A sampling area DB1 definitely included in the skin area of the color image DC1 is beforehand extracted on the basis of a distance image DS showing the three-dimensional shape of the human bead part in the color image DC1. A typical skin color is calculated from the pixel value of the area DB1, and a temporary skin area DB2 is calculated from the image DC1 by using the skin color. Further, an illumination state is estimated from the shape shown by the distance image DS and the pixel value in the area DB2 of the image DC1. Then, the pixel value of a pixel having corresponding distance data in the image DC1 is corrected into a pixel value that is not affected by the change of the illumination state due to the shape of the head part. An appropriate skin area DB3 is subsequently extracted by using the corrected color image DC2 and extracting a skin area again.
