PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a road monitoring device in which the measuring precision of a distance to a monitoring object is easily improved. SOLUTION: A shape recognition part 2, an object extracting part 3 and a centroid detection part 4 detect the position of the centroid of an object 6 from image data outputted from an image pickup part 1 for picking up the image of a road. An optical axis control part 7 and a light emitting part 5 for controlling an optical axis to fit to the centroid of the object 6 by the centroid information are provided. Then, the electric information of reflected light from the object 6 is obtained by a light receiving part 8 to judge a distance to the object 6 and the speed of the object.
