Apparatus for producing tear-strips from an elongate web 1, Fig. 1, of material of width equal to the desired length of the tear-strips to be produced, comprises feed rollers 3 to advance the web between a pair of knives 5, 7, operable transversely of the direction of advance of the web, and a conveyer to receive and remove the strips from the knives. The feed rollers operate incrementally to advance an appropriate amount of tear-strip material. The knife 7 effects a progressive cut, starting at the downstream edge of the web (relative to the conveyer movement). As it is severed the strip is blown upwards by an air-blast from apertures in the upper surface of the knife 7, which are supplied, via a pipe 12, with compressed air. Above the knife 7 is the lower run 13, Fig. 2, of an air-pervious conveyer belt 14 arranged with a suction box 16, so that the severed strip is held against the belt 14. A wrapper web 17 is fed from a reel 18, around a guide roller 19 and is supplied with a line of adhesive by a wheel 20 fed from a gum pot 21 via a wick 22. Thus the strip adheres to the wrapper web as it is pressed against the roller 15. A heater 23 may be provided to dry the gum. In a second similar embodiment, the wrapper material is applied above the tear-strip, and cutting is effected by a pivoted scissorstype blade. A suction drum may be used in place of the pervious belt, in which ease the fixed and movable blades are curved to allow for the curvature of the drum. Alternatively, an electrostatic charge may be directly applied to, e.g. a nylon conveyer belt, or a nylon belt may acquire sufficient charge, as a result of movement, to cause adherence of the tearstrips during their transfer to the wrapper web. The intermittent incremental movement of the rollers, which feed the tear-strip web, may be obtained by a system of ratchets and pawls, fine adjustment being effected by releasing the upper roller by operation of a handle, cams and bell-crank lever arrangement. |
