PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlashless rack and pinion mechanism simple in struc ture and capable of eliminating backlash at a low cost. SOLUTION: In this rack and pinion mechanism, plural pinions 2a, 2b are disposed at suitable spaces on the same rack 1 to mesh therewith, a pair of pulleys 3 are journalled onto the same axis 2c of the pinions 2a, 2b, and a belt 4 is wound and stretched over the paired pulleys 3. In this arrangement, the pinions 2a, 2b are always applied with torque T for putting the contact surface of the pinion/rack in the backlashless state through the pulleys 3 so that only one side of both upper and lower sides of the belt 4 forming a ring generates tension, and the other side generates looseness, whereby backlash generated at the normal and reverse driving operation can be eliminated.
