PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for evaluating the strength of a porous body capable of accurately estimating the strength of the porous body, particularly coke, based on standard method, solely through the measurement of porosity using small amounts of samples and through a mercury press-in test. SOLUTION: Porosityϕis measured from a sample of the porous body. The mercury press-in test is conducted for the sample to determine closed pore wall breaking pressure Fc and pore wall thickness dp. Strength tests based on the standard method are initially conducted for samples of various porous bodies to measure standard porous body strength I; pore wall thickness dp and closed pore wall breaking pressure Fc are measured for the sample of each porous body and the relationship between the standard porous body strength I, the pore wall thickness dp and the closed pore wall breaking pressure Fc is determined. Pore wall thickness dp and closed pore wall breaking pressure Fc are determined for a sample of an unknown porous body, whereby the standard porous body strength I of the unknown porous body is estimated on the basis of the relationship.
