PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to efficiently decode sound data from a target position when reproducing the data from a position designated by a user for rewinding, fast-forwarding, or the like, in a coding method intended for storing the sound data. SOLUTION: When rewinding is requested from a user, this device sets a presumed rewinding position tx1 based on the request for rewinding and the requested amount; searches for 'ESC' existing in the neighborhood of the presumed rewinding position along a axis time from the presumed position; examines the temporal before-and-after relation between the presumed rewinding position and a target rewinding position t1; when the presumed rewinding position is at a position suitable to the target rewinding position, the device performs null-reproduction by decoding the data from the control data position and then starts actually reproducing at the time of having reached the rewinding position; and the presumed rewinding position is not at a position suitable to the target rewinding position, the device determines another presumed rewinding position again to perform similar processing.
