<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic transmission which is made compact in construction around a piston of a clutch drum and is reduced in longitudinal dimension. SOLUTION: The clutch drum is a two piece construction composed of an inner drum 30 and an outer drum 40 wherein a shoulder 35 is formed in the inner drum at the transition region from a disc section 32 to an outer liner 33 and a vertical wall 41 of the outer drum is abutted against the shoulder and then is welded. The inner drum can be used as a cylinder for the piston, that it, the internal circumference thereof up to the tip can be used as a piston sliding surface of enough length, even when the outer liner 33 is shorter in length. An extension 63 of the piston having a pressing projection 64 for friction plates, after crossing the tip of the outer liner, is offset toward the vertical wall 41, and preserve the stroke clearance D against a clutch hub 50, which leads to a further reduction of longitudinal length of the entire clutch.</p> |
