PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multiple heat pump type air conditioner capable of controlling the frequency of operation with a long-circulation passage multiple refrigeration cycle, regulating the operating frequency upper limit, and operating without trouble of lubrication. SOLUTION: The air conditioner detects the temperature of air taken in for heat exchange in a plurality of indoor units to control the operating frequency. It detects the outside air temperature to control the operating frequency. It detects the temperature of air taken in for heat exchange in the plurality of indoor units and the outside air temperature to control the operating frequency according to both detected temperatures. It detects the temperature of air taken in for heat exchange in the plurality of indoor units, and the outside air temperature to regulate the maximum operating frequency in the air heating operation with a minimum number of the indoor units, based on both detected temperatures and the number of operating units.
