PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a separator for an alkaline storage battery having superior self-discharge inhibiting operation and wetting performance and less dispersion of a capacity maintaining percentage, and its production. SOLUTION: The separator for the alkaline storage battery comprises a fiber sheet having an average ammonia trapping amount of 0.4 mmol/g or more. The producing method comprises giving graft polymerization to the fiber sheet, on which a graft polymerizing liquid containing a graft polymerization possible monomer, an oligomer, and/or a polymer and a 0.01 mass % or more surface active agent are deposited, under the existence of oxygen and then giving further graft polymerization to the fiber sheet with all regions on the upper and lower faces covered with a non-permeable film to prepare a graft polymerized fiber sheet for the alkaline storage battery separator.
