1,106,952. Refilling Iron. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. March 17, 1965 [March 31, 1964], No.11238/65. Heading C7D. A bath of molten iron is refined by top blowing it with at least one stream of oxygen to which has been added a non-gaseous fluidized fuel, namely a liquid fuel e.g. fuel or motor oil, kerosene, heptane, heavier petroleum distillates and other liquid hydrocarbons, or a solid fuel dispersion in a liquid carrier e.g. coal dust suspended in fuel oil, in an amount of 3 to 12 1bs/1000SCF of oxygen flow (48À7 to 195g/m<SP>3</SP>) sufficient to suppress the formation of iron oxide fume. The admixture may be blown against the bath surface from a lance (see Figure) initially positioned higher than the normal working height for refining, and then lowered. Initially, oxygen only may be blown, or a near stoichiometric ratio of fuel to oxygen (i.e. in excess of 12 1bs/1000SCF oxygen) may be supplied to the lance which is operated as a burner to introduce additional heat to any cold metallic charge. The fuel may carry slag-forming ingredients, e.g. lime, limestone, fluorspar or calcium carbide. Refining may be effected in open hearth, rotating or electric furnace or basic oxygen process vessels. |
