PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a wide viewing angle and to improve the picture quality, with respect to a liquid crystal display device. SOLUTION: The substrate for a liquid crystal display device has a glass substrate 60, a color filter 61 which is formed on the glass substrate 60 and which has a recessed pattern with its side walls making 30 deg. to 120 deg. angle to the glass substrate 60, and a common electrode 80 which is formed on the color filter 61 and which has a recessed pattern 81 along the recessed pattern of the color filter 60.
