PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp which is capable of reducing glare, and makes a lighting apparatus simple and lightweight. SOLUTION: This device has an arc tube 1 with a discharge space 1d, a pair of electrodes 2 and 2b whose tips are facing each other within the discharge space 1d, an outer tube 6 surrounding the arc tube 1, a base metal 7 fixing one side of the outer tube 6, and two belt-like light shield films 14 and 15 which are extended on the surface of the outer tube 6 in the axial direction of the arc tube 1 and parallel to each other. An extension part 15a is formed in at least one of the light shield films 14 and 15, which extends to the tip of the electrode 2a within the discharge space 1d on the side of the top portion 27 of the outer tube 6 as well as in the peripheral direction of the outer tube 6. This makes dispersion of the brightness distribution of the light distribution pattern narrower and prevent occurrence of glare, which obviates the need to add a new device such as a light shield plate or the like to reduce glare, and makes the lighting apparatus simplified and lightweight.
