PURPOSE: A pharmaceutical composition containing histone H2A, H2B or active fragments thereof as an active ingredient is provided, which improves the symptoms of progressive, inflammatory and autoimmune arthritis. The composition can be used alone or with conventional arthritis treating agents. CONSTITUTION: A pharmaceutical composition for the treatment of the symptoms of progressive, inflammatory and autoimmune arthritis contains histone H2A, H2B or active fragments thereof as an active ingredient and if necessary, a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier, wherein the fraction contains the sequence of Thr-Arg-Ser-Ser-Arg-Ala-Gly-Leu-Gln-Phe-Pro-Val-Gly-Arg-Val-His-Arg-Leu-Arg- Lys.
