PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a yoke type magnetoresistive head used for reading signals out of a magnetic tape and the like. SOLUTION: In the method for manufacturing the magnetoresistive head having a magnetoresistive element disposed in a part of a yoke consisting of a soft magnetic film, the part of the magnetoresistive element is manufactured in the following steps. A longitudinal bias magnetic field is applied to a magnetism-sensing part to make a single magnetic domain and a hard magnetic layer 10 for suppressing the generation of Barkhausen noise is formed. Then a first non-magnetic insulating layer 20 having a prescribed film thickness is formed on the hard magnetic layer and the magnetoresistive element 30 is formed on the first non-magnetic insulating layer. Then the element and the layers including the hard magnetic layer are patterned altogether and successively a second non-magnetic insulating layer 40 having a prescribed film thickness is formed so that the end parts of the magnetoresistive element 30 and the hard magnetic layer 10 are coated. Then electrode films 50 are formed on both end parts of the upper surface of the magnetoresistive element so that a current flows through only the magnetoresistive element to enhance the sensitivity.
