PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To adjust the detection characteristics of a detection part so as to make the output level constant in the case of scanning the examination faces of the same characteristics with the detection part even without periodically locating a reflection standard on the conveying path of paper money. SOLUTION: This device has a detection part 34 having a light source 36 for irradiating an examination face 16a of a paper money 16 with light and a light receiving part 38 for receiving reflected light from the examination face 16a and a decision part 46 for identifying the paper money 16 by comparing the output pattern detected by the detection part 34 with a standard output pattern. Besides, a reference reflector 42 is located on a non-examination face 16b of the paper money 16 on a conveying path A and an adjustment part 44 adjusts the amount of light from the light source 36. A control part previously stores the output level of the light receiving part 38, which receives the reflected light from the reference reflector 42, in a storage part 48 as a reference level. When starting the identification of the paper money 16 with the decision part later, the output level of the light receiving part 38 receiving the reflected light from the reference reflector 42 is compared with the reference level. Then, the amount of light from the light source 36 is adjusted so that the detected level is equal to the reference level.
