The method involves determining the deformation ratio of the metal component and monitoring the straightening. A test stroke (P1) is applied at a first reference point (X1), which exceeds the elastic deformation area, but is less than a desired target amount. The pressure on the reference point is then released. Test strokes (P2-P4) are applied to the other points (X2-X4). Remaining straightening strokes (R1-R4) are calculated and applied. Corresponding test strokes (P2-P4) are applied successively to the other points (X2-X4), taking into account the plastic deformation produced at all of the other points, for each point. The sizes of successive remaining straightening strokes (R1-4) are determined from the plastic deformation of the test strokes, and the remaining strokes are applied.
