The franking machine has a printer (2) for printing a postmark on each mail item, with a control unit (1) controlling the printer and peripheral components (7,8,9) of the franking machine, with a security module (4) calculating the postage charge data. The control unit is activated by interrogation and transfer of a security code to the security module, with de-activation of the latter upon transfer of a false security code, or failed transfer of the security code, for preventing further franking operations. An independent claim for a security module for a franking machine is also included.
