Gratings which have been annealed at low temperatures resulting in increased thermal stability. These may be made by a first UV or IR exposure followed by a low temperature annealing at 125 degrees for 24 hours and writing a grating (52) into the photosensitive core (36) of the fiber (40) as shown in figure 2. The use of these with temperature controllers is also disclosed.
