A compound of formula (I) or a fuel-soluble salt thereof, is new; where R1 = nitro or (CH2)xNR4R5; R4 and R5 each = H or 1-6 C alkyl; x = 0 or 1; R2 = H, hydroxy, nitro or NR6R7; R6 and R7 each = H or 1-6 C alkyl; R = R3 or C(O)OR3; and R3 = polyalkyl of average molecular wt. 450-5000. Also claimed are: (i) the fuel composition comprising a major amount of hydrocarbons boiling in the gasoline or diesel range and an amount of (I) sufficient to control engine deposits; and (ii) the fuel concentrate comprising an inert stable oleophilic organic solvent of b. pt. 150-400[deg]F and 10-70 wt.% (I).
