Two-dimensional pattern (2c) and optically separatable patterns (2a,2b) are scanned respectively by 2D detector (7) and photodetectors (5a,5b,6a,6b) to output signals (S) and signals (Sa,Sb). The signals (S,Sa,Sb) are compared with predetermined signals. Based on comparison result, the signals are selectively converted to produce signals (S1,S2) which are then combined to produce an identification signal. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) Two-dimensional pattern recognition device; (b) Use of two-dimensional pattern recognition.
