An apparatus (10) that injects fluid, preferably a hydrocarbon gas, such as methane, into the exhaust gas stream of a coal-burning plant. The methane combusts, releasing oxygen atoms that react with SO2 molecules in the exhaust gas stream to form transient SO3 molecules. During their short existence, on the order of a few hundred milliseconds to over a second at temperatures of 450K to 1000K, the SO3 molecules react with water vapor in the exhaust gas and water vapor from the combustion of methane with oxygen to form sulfuric acid. The sulfuric acid coats fly ash in the exhaust gas, creating a conductive coating that permits an electrostatic precipitator (26) to collect much of the fly ash. Any remaining SO3 converts back to SO2 before exiting the exhaust duct (12).
|
