An item including transaction parameters to be used by a purchaser in deciding to commit to a commercial transaction is presented (201) to a potential purchaser (107). The potential purchaser, after receiving the presented transaction parameters (205), accepts or rejects the commercial transaction. At transaction time a marketplace variable affecting the commercial transaction is obtained (202). In response to the rejection, at least one transaction parameter is modified based on the identified marketplace variable to generate an alternative offer (203). The alternative offer is presented to the potential purchaser at transaction time.
