The fuel injection system has an injector, for direct injection of fuel into the engine combustion chamber, coupled to a high pressure fuel rail (2) via a screw coupling (3) using a threaded nut (4), with at least one pressure limiting device in the vicinity of the screw coupling. The pressure limiting device can be provided by a perpendicular bore (11), which connects the inner part of the screw coupling with the outside atmosphere, positioned shortly above the sealing surface (9) for the high pressure fuel rail.
