The invention concerns a simple, cost-effective and reliable method for protecting an electrical motor against thermal overloads. To this end, a motor equation for said electrical motor is defined, said equation combining at least one temperature-dependent parameter and at least one characteristic curve of said motor based on a model of the motor. The actual values of the at least one characteristic curve of the motor are determined during at least two consecutive measuring intervals of a measuring process. The value of the at least one temperature-dependent parameter of the motor for the measuring intervals of a measuring process is determined on the basis of the motor equations. The absolute value of the temperature of the electrical motor is determined on the basis of the motor equations which are derived from the measuring intervals of a measuring process taking into account the functional relationship between the at least one temperature-dependent parameter of the motor and the temperature. If the absolute temperature value of the electrical motor reaches a predetermined limit temperature, given measures concerning current conduction through the electrical motor are taken. The invention also relates to a method for protecting an electrical motor in an electrical drive unit for window lifter drive mechanisms.
