The invention relates to a method for determining a characteristic value for the binding force potential of the paper fibers present in a fiber suspensio n that is prepared for producing paper. According to the invention, the air content of the fiber suspension is measured and the characteristic value is determined for this measurement. The correlation between the characteristic value and the measured air content can be determined e.g., by means of empirical series of measurements. The method provides a means of evaluating and correcting e.g. runnability on the paper machine before faults can appea r.
