Supported ionic liquids, process for preparation and use thereof

The invention relates to a process to make a supported ionic liquid, the supported ionic liquid so obtained, and the use of this supported ionic liquid as a catalyst in chemical processes. The process involves the pretreatment of a dried support with a metal halide and impregnation of the pretreated support with an ionic liquid. The supported ionic liquid show less leaching of the ionic liquid when used in subsequent processes such as olefin alkylation. In the examples MCM-41 is used as catalyst carrier.
