Artificial ophthalmic "spare parts" which are made of biocompatible material and may be implanted by a surgeon either in the region of the ciliary sulcus or in the residual natural capsular bag of a patient's eye following cataract surgery so as to serve as a receptacle for an intraocular lens or other optical or mechanical device, may have the form of an either anteriorly incomplete and posteriorly complete capsular bag-like structure with a generally toroidal equatorial region, or the form of a both anteriorly and posteriorly incomplete generally toroidally ring-shaped capsular bag-like structure, the interior space of the toroidal part of the structure between the anterior and posterior walls constituting a compartment into which an optical or other device may be inserted. Such a capsular bag-like structure can also serve to provide an enhanced capability of inhibiting posterior capsular opacification in the residual natural capsular bag, and has a series of stiff but flexible external spines for fixating the structure to the ciliary body and selectively can have a circumferentially resiliently compressible split washer-like configuration, an interior circumferential rib dividing the compartment into two subcompartments, a visually perceptible series of degree markings on at least one of the anterior and posterior walls to facilitate orientation of the optical or other devices being inserted into the structure. <IMAGE> |
