Process for producing sponge iron with low sulfur content

A charge (7) in the form of layers (1, M) of finely divided material is deposited on a moving grate (5). The layer (1) consists of iron oxides whilst the layer (M) is a mixt. of a solid carbonaceous redn. agent (2) and a desulphurant (3). The charge is heated, causing at least some of the redn. agent (2) to be converted into gaseous carbon and sulphur cpds. The iron oxides of the layer (1) are reduced by means of at least some of the CO present in the gaseous carbon cpds. At least some of the sulphur present in the gaseous sulphur cpds. is eliminated by means of the desulphurant, after which the reduced iron oxide material is sepd. from the rest of the charge.
