PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a batch esterification reactor exhibiting a little in reduced loss of ethylene glycol, capable of obtaining a homogeneous product and having excellent stable operability. SOLUTION: An apparatus to be used in the batch-type esterification of an aromatic dicarboxylic acid with an alkylene glycol. In this apparatus, a distillation tower 5 is placed at the upper side of the esterification reactor 1, and these apparatuses are connected with a reaction gas exhausting tube 3 and a refluxing liquid returning tube 10. The reaction gas exhausting tube 3 is partitioned by a pressure adjusting valve 4 for pressure control. The refluxing liquid returning tube 10 has a refluxing solution tank 11 whose entrance and exit are provided with partition valves 12 and 13, respectively, in the middle part. As the partition valves 12, 13 of the refluxing solution tank 11, opening speed controlling-type valves are used.
