PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an imaging apparatus comprising a toner carrier 10, and means 4 for controlling passage of toner through a plurality of toner passing holes 14 in which reliability of forming a high quality image is ensured for a long term by preventing toner from depositing with time on the surface of a spacer 22 for regulating the distance between a toner layer carried on the toner carrier 10 and the opening of the toner passing hole 14 through contact with the toner layer. SOLUTION: By carrying toner through a toner carrier 10 while differentiating at least one of contact load, contact area, contact position and contact angle between the spacer 22 and the toner layer as compared with that at the time of recording operation, toner deposited on the contact range with the toner layer and the part other than the contact range during recording operation on the surface of the spacer 22 is removed thus preventing occurrence of a streak on a recorded image due to scratching of the toner layer or uneven density due to variation in the distance between the toner passage control means 4 and the toner layer.
