PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of stably producing an azo group-bearing polyamide that is constituted with a polyamide unit with a number-average molecular weight in a specific range. SOLUTION: A polyamide that bears at least one amino groups and has a number-average molecular weight of 500-40,000 and an azo group-bearing activated ester represented by general formula (1) (wherein Z is an active ester group; R1 and R2 are each H, a 1-6C alkyl or nitrile; a is zero or an integer of 1-6) are formulated so that the molar equivalent ratio of the amino group to the active ester group may be in the range of from 1/0.5 to 1/10 and they are allowed to react with each other in at least one solvent selected from phenolic solvents, fluoroalcohol solvents and inorganic halide-including amide solvents to produce the objective azo group-bearing polyamide.
