1,145,765. Hydroxy esters. AEROJETGENERAL CORP. 25 Jan., 1967 [26 Jan., 1966; 16 Sept., 1966], No. 3733/67. Heading C2C. Hydroxy esters are prepared by reaction between an organic aromatic polybasic carboxylic acid and an alkylene oxide in the presence of a catalyst which is a trivalent chromium compound. Reaction may be carried out in the presence of a solvent. Suitable alkylene oxides are ethylene oxide, 1,2-epoxyhexane, propylene oxide and cyclohexene oxide. Examples of products are: tris (2-hydroxyethyl) trimesate and bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate obtained by reaction of trimesic acid and terephthalic respectively with ethylene oxide. The chromium compound may be a salt of a carboxylic acid, e.g. an octoate, oleate, cresylate or naphthenate or a chromium chelate. Inorganic compounds e.g. chromates and Cr 2 O 3 are also referred to. The polybasic acid may be used in the form of its anhydride. |
