A milling cutter which may be used for milling away parts of a stereotype printing plate has a cutter member eccentrically mounted in a rotatable head which is adapted automatically to take up one of two different positions for cutting at different radii from the axis of rotation of the head in dependence upon the direction of rotation. In a first embodiment, Fig. 1, the cutter 10 is eccentrically mounted in a head 1 which is capable of part rotary motion, e.g. through 180 degrees, relative to a driving spindle 2 in which the head 1 is mounted by means of bearings 3, to take up one of two positions in abutment with a stop member 6 the cutter 10 being located at two different radii in these two positions. A centrifugally operated ball catch (Fig. 2, not shown) assists in retaining the head 1 in either of the two positions. In a second embodiment, Fig. 4, the cutter is eccentrically mounted in a head 11 which is pivotably supported by a pin 17 in a bifurcated end portion of the driving spindle 12. Rotatably mounted around the head 11 are two shell members 19, 16 the former having sloping and end stop faces (21, 22, Fig. 5, not shown) which co-operate with pegs 20 on the head 11 to bring the head into two different pivotal positions depending upon the direction of rotation. |
