PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify control in a power save mode and to prevent the lifetime of an apparatus from lowering by preventing undue turn on/off of power supply. SOLUTION: In an ink jet printer performing print out based on a received input signal and having a power save function for monitoring the input signal and interrupting power supply to each section when the input signal is not received for a predetermined time, power is supplied to at least an input signal monitoring means (main CPU 8, ROM 9, RAM 10), means 25 for controlling power supply to each section, and means required for maintenance of ink jet head (sub-CPU 12, ROM 13, RAM 14, ink jet head 16, head controller 178, maintenance means 21) even when power supply to each section is interrupted by the power save function.
