An itaconic acid derivative having the following formulas (1) or (2):wherein R1 represents a hydrogen atom, a lower alkyl group or a phenyl lower alkyl group, wherein the phenyl ring of the phenyl lower alkyl group is unsubstituted or substituted by at least one lower alkyl group, R2 represents a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group and A represents a lower alkylene group, or salts thereof. Copolymers can be made from the itaconic acid derivatives.
