A method and apparatus for surveying the storage devices of a computer system to generate a list of module names stored on the storage devices in order to produce an inventory of the module names. The inventorying/ surveying process is carried out on a continuous basis so that virtually at all times the list of module names is up to date with the current status of the modules that are stored on the storage devices. The surveying is carried out by one of a variety of processes including constant surveying of module names stored by comparison to an immediately preceding survey. Another approach carries out the surveying by monitoring usage of load modules. A third approach interacts by creating hooks and vectors with the software that is responsible for recording the addition, deletion, or modification of modules on the computer system. |
