PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent various functions from being damaged by preventing a cover member from being opened easily. SOLUTION: The thermal transfer printer comprises means 30 for locking a cover member 1B under closed state, an opening 1C for inserting or drawing a ribbon cassette 5 containing an ink ribbon 17, a ribbon cassette sensor 18 disposed in the vicinity of the ribbon cassette inserting/drawing opening 1C and detecting at least the type and orientation of a ribbon cassette 5 inserted from the opening 1C, a control means 25 for deciding whether a correct ribbon cassette 5 is inserted or not by receiving a detection signal from the ribbon cassette sensor 18 and unlocking the locking means 30, and means for discharging an incorrect ribbon cassette 5 from the ribbon cassette inserting/drawing opening 1C in response to a control signal from the control means 25. |
