Switching plane selection for packet switch network

The method of handling redundant switching planes in packet switches involves monitoring the quality of the planes. The network has input ports which redundantly transmit data on one or more planes. The data packets are received by an output port. The two switching planes are identical and parallel to each other. Each output port has a buffer (25) for the packet on each plane. As packets arrive, checks are performed to establish the correctness of the data based on a checksums. The data is maintained (28) over each plane and for the packets. At each packet selection, the plane with the best quality is used to receive data. Hysteresis is applied to limit plane changes.
