PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a laser diode array assembly, having an integral means for recording operational events, and at the same time, to hold the recorded information together with the assembly through the service period of the assembly and a method for operating the assembly. SOLUTION: This laser diode array assembly 40 has a laser diode array 30 and a memory device 42 mounted integrally with the array 30. The memory device 42 stores the operational information on the array 30 and is accessible from a host external operating system. The external operating system decides the supplying method of electric power to the array 30, based on the operational information. By constituting the memory device 42 in a writable, the external operating system can record important events, such as critical operating states, operational abnormality, the turn-on time of the array 30, shot counts, etc., in the memory device 42.
