PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress upper and lower shadings. SOLUTION: An inputted video signal MV1 is converted by an A/D converter 11 into a digital signal, which is stored in a field memory 12, reads out in the storing address order or reversely according to a direction control signal DR, and converted by a D/A converter 14 into an analog signal. This video signal becomes a polarity inverted signal by switching the outputs of an amplifier 15 and an inverting amplifier 16 by a switch 17 controlled with an inversion control signal RV and it is applied to a video signal input line 8. A vertical scanning circuit 6, on the other hand, switches the scanning direction according to a direction control signal DR2. Consequently, the scanning direction is switched at each field period, so an observer recognizes as video a state where upper and lower shadings in the respective directions are mixed to obtain a vertically uniform display.
