PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display device which is capable of displaying images of multiple gradations in a surface sequential system for displaying multicolors by sequential irradiation with light of different colors. SOLUTION: The state of the present optical modulation element is held by a first memory element 35 consisting of a binary value storable SRAM of an evanescent optical switching element (ESD) 10 and first switching elements 28a and 28b and second switching elements 29a and 29b are disposed. The writing of the data of a next screen (frame) to the second memory element 27 is made possible. The data of the second memory element 27 is transferred to a first memory element 25 by a surface sequential signalϕs, by which the state of the ESD displaying the image is changed and the simultaneous rewriting the entire part of the screen is made possible by a first clock.
