Continuous preparation of triethanolamine (TEA) involves reacting ethylene oxide with ammonia to produce a reaction mixture of mono-, di- and tri-ethanolamine; separating the unreacted ammonia and TEA formed from the reaction mixture. Continuous preparation of triethanolamine (TEA) involves reacting ethylene oxide with ammonia to produce a reaction mixture of alkanolamines containing mono-, di- and tri-ethanolamine; separating the unreacted ammonia and TEA formed from the reaction mixture. In the separating step a specific mixture of TEA and at least one secondary dialkanolamines (0.5 - 50 wt.%) is prepared or isolated from the reaction mixture by continuous distillation.
