Preparation of stable, colloidal functionalized particles (I) comprises (a) forming a stable, isodisperse colloidal aqueous dispersion of (in)organic particles (II) with reactive functional groups; (b) contacting dispersion of polymer solution (III) with ionizable functional groups; and (c) incubating the mixture so (II) functional groups react partially with (II) to form covalent bonds. Preparation of stable, colloidal functionalized particles (I) comprises: (a) forming a stable, isodisperse colloidal aqueous dispersion of organic and/or inorganic particles (II) comprising reactive functional groups X selected from amino, hydroxy, thiol, aldehyde, ester, anhydride, acid chloride, carbonate, carbamate, isocyanate and/or isothiocyanate; (b) contacting the dispersion with a solution of a polymer (III) having ionizable functional groups Z and Z' (same or different) selected from amino, carboxylic acid, ester, anhydride, aldehyde, thiol, disulfide, alpha -halocarbonyl, sulfonic acid, isothiocyanate and/or isothiocyanate; and (c) incubating the mixture so that groups Z and/or Z' react partially with groups X to form covalent bonds. An Independent claim is included for particles (I) as a particulate reactant with an affinity for biological compounds (A), where the particles comprise solid (in)organic core of (II) and a polymeric envelope of (III) and the at least part of the groups X are reacted with part of the groups Z and Z' in (III) to form covalent bonds. |
