PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lead-acid battery keeping a large capacity and a long service life, even if it is used at a high rate of discharge. SOLUTION: After kraft lignin and cresol at a ratio of 1 g to 20 ml respectively are mixed sufficiently sulfuric acid of a 70 mass % concentration is added to the mixture at the ratio of 20 ml to 1 g of kraft and stirred strongly for 20 minutes and in an atmosphere of approximately 25 deg.C to make full reaction. The stirring is stopped and excess ethyl ether is added to a layer of the separated cresol solution, to settle 1 g of lignin and to finally obtain dried lignin. The dried lignin is added to the negative pole plate or both negative plate and separator to complete a sealed lead-acid battery. A macromolecular body intertwined like a (aegagropila) by its self-condensation, dissociates by receiving attack of phenol derivative and is converted into that of a linearized composition. As a result, a functional group in the lignin molecule operates efficiently on the surface of the negative plate active material particles.
