PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an MPEG standard coded video sequence with simplified computation, which is suitable for applications at a low cost. SOLUTION: The method of this invention calculates respective top motion coefficient (VTOPX,Y(K)) and bottom motion coefficient (VBOTX,Y(K)) depending on estimation of a motion vector of a top half frame (MVTOPX,Y(K)) and a bottom half frame (MVBOTX,Y(K)) with respect to each macro block consisting of a top half frame and a bottom half frame, the current picture is recognized as an interlace picture when the distributions of the motion coefficients (VTOPX,Y(K), VBOTX,Y(K)) are substantially equal to each other, and the current picture is recognized as a progressive picture when the distributions of the motion coefficients (VTOPX,Y(K), VBOTX,Y(K)) are substantially different from each other. |
