Artificial sausage casing sections are cut to the desired size. The open end (11) of the casing (10) is introduced into a centrally-folded closure strip (12). The strip is sewn to the casing and parted off from the strip supply unit. An independent claim is included for the corresponding cut section of casing which is closed as described. Preferred features: An open end of the casing is turned back to a predetermined width, if appropriate being folded in addition, before introduction into the folded closure strip. The pack (comprising closure strip and casing) is not advanced whilst the needle is being inserted and retracted through it. An over-edge seam is sewn, using multiple threads. Cut casing sections are prepared in a set quantity, as a supply pack. The closure strip is a woven cotton material; the sewing thread is artificial and capable of swelling.
