The method involves measuring the state of an electrical (26), mechanical or hydraulic consumer to raise a motor load. An injected fuel quantity is controlled to compensate for the torque to produce the increased motor load. The exhaust gas (22) temperature may be increased to desulphurise a catalytic converter (14) or to regenerate a particle filter. The consumer may be a heater or air conditioning unit.
