The drive has 2 different electric motors (16,18), each coupled to the automobile battery (12) via an inverter (14), one of the generators acting as a generator and coupled to an IC engine (20) via a differential (22), the other motor used for direct drive of a driven wheel axle (30). A first one-way coupling (26) is provided between the differential and the IC engine and a second one-way coupling (28) is provided within the differential.
